figuring out summer care for my son, a 13 year old is daunting for me. This is the first time I have had to figure this out in a long time, as my husband died last August. He was retired and home with our son for the last several years, so this is a big change for both of us, and I hardly know where to begin. We looked have been looking at a calendar to start to plan things out, but so far it just seems unmanageable to me.

That is daunting, Ellen, and I am so sorry for the loss of your husband. Have you considered contacting Big Brothers Big Sisters? I was a mentor in the program last year, and I know that your son might fit the criteria for such a program, and find a role model/fun things to do. I also don't know if there are some family members and friends who have offered to step up to the plate, but I know when one of my best friends passed away two years ago, her siblings really made her son feel welcomed in their family activities. I hope that might provide some options as opposed to traditional child care, as your son is becoming a young man and at a crucial age. Your family will be in my prayers.
