Packing for your child’s stay with relatives
Sending your children to the relatives while you’re away is a great way to ensure that they’ll be well cared for. They might even get to play with other family members their age. But, no matter how close you are to your family, or how comfortable you are leaving your children in their hands, you can’t expect them to provide your kids with everything they need. Be sure to call in advance and discuss your child’s stay; your relatives will be happy you did and you’ll feel secure that they know the child care details that are important to you.
Pack a duffel bag for your child and write a reminder note of instructions for your relatives. Be sure to list things like medication, food allergies, or bed time rituals, and a phone number and address where you can be reached. Before you pack a bag for your child, ask your relative about whether or not they have extra pillows, bedding, toiletries, etc. Other items you may also want to pack include: pajamas, clothes, socks, and underwear; toiletries, such as a toothbrush and toothpaste; a favorite stuffed animal; and books or magazines to read before bed. The length of your child’s visit will determine how much and which items you need to pack.
Just because your child sees familiar faces, doesn’t mean he won’t miss you or get homesick. Don’t forget to give a call just to check in or say goodnight. If you can’t make a call, write a love-note and put it into your child’s overnight bag for him to discover at bedtime.
