Packing for your child’s day camp

Day camp may not be as difficult to pack for as overnight camp, but you still need to plan. Find out beforehand how much storage space your child will have. Also, ask what items are recommended or prohibited. Some camps do not allow counselors to apply sunscreen or insect repellent to your child. If this is the case, you’ll need to apply it at home before camp. Check in with the camp director if your child has special sunscreen needs or sensitivities. Your child may have to re-apply his own sunscreen during the day, so you might want to help him practice once or twice to be sure he’s getting good coverage.

Here's a general list of things you should probably include in your child’s backpack:

  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellent
  • Bathing suit and towel
  • Lunch and snacks (if not provided by camp)
  • Water bottle
  • Extra change of clothes
  • Raincoat
  • Windbreaker or sweatshirt
  • Comfortable shoes
  • Plastic bags for wet clothes

Be sure to clearly label all items with your child’s name. Also, see if there’s a secure place at camp where your child can leave extra clothes or footwear (this may be required for very young campers). Your child will be prepared for unexpected weather or “accidents.”
