Summer Health Concerns for Kids

Plan ahead and take a quick glance at some common health concerns:

  • Children’s skin is particularly sensitive to the sun. Read up on preventing and treating sunburns on the Skin Cancer Foundation’s SunSmart Parents and Kids page.

Update: The Skin Cancer Foundation's web site seems to be down for maintenance. Try taking this Sunburn Safety Quiz on About.com's Pediatrics section, instead.

  • Most ticks don’t carry diseases, but it’s important to know how to prevent tick bites, properly remove a tick, and recognize the symptoms of Lyme disease.  Check out this article on ParentCenter.com.

  • Learn first aid for bee and wasp stings on WebMD.

  • Children are especially prone to heat illness. Read up on the symptoms of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke on WebMD.

  • Children should never swim without supervision. Check out tips from the Red Cross on water safety.

  • Whether your kids are biking, rollerblading, or skateboarding, it’s important for them to keep safety in mind. You can direct your kids to KidsHealth.org for information on bike safety.

Cheers,

Sheila
