Activities on a Rainy Day
Dear Readers:
Ah, summer feels so close, but there are days in Boston when it feels far. It's been chilly and raining here for the past few days, and it looks like this weather will continue throughout the weekend.
We were recently out in Michigan to visit my brother Ruel, my sister Suzzette, and their families. It was raining there too, and it made me think about fun rainy-day activities. Here’s some great stuff I’ve heard from friends and folks in the company:
- Board Game: Quiddler
. This card game is a great way for families to have fun with words. We call it fast Scrabble for kids. There’s no need to torture your younger kids with a long game of Scrabble. The game also teaches kids addition and subtraction. We got my brother’s family hooked and even my teenage niece! For more games, check out Board Game Central.
- Science: Celery and colored water experiment. A rainy spring day is a perfect time to learn how plants use water. My coworker Lauren remembers performing this experiment as a kid: put a celery stalk in a glass of colored water and let it sit for a few hours until the color has been sucked up through the celery. The experiment demonstrates how water is carried through plants via capillary action. For more classic home experiments, visit Bizarre Labs.
- Fun Food: Quesadilla Pizzas. Two kiddy favorites combined into one recipe! Rachel Ray's 30 Minute Meals
has a great recipe for ages 7 and up, and it’s oh-so-yummy and really easy. Carlean Johnson's Six Ingredients or Less
also has a great kid section.
- Shake Your Baby Bootie: BabyLovesDisco. Just because you have to stay indoors doesn’t mean you have to stay at home. My friend Adam told me about babylovesdisco. Visit their site for information on kid-friendly daytime dance parties at your local discotheque. I’m bummed that the upcoming Boston events are sold out, but there’s still availability in other cities.
Games, experiments, recipes… If anyone has other great ideas, please feel free to comment!
Enjoy the rainy day!
Cheers,
Sheila
